Buyer beware

January 4, 2012

I was perusing the “Year in Review” posts at The New Yorker (looking, mostly, for Anthony Lane’s contribution), when I came upon an amusing short piece by Peter Nadas called “The Year in Not Reading”. He cites a line from Schopenhauer:

Buying books would be a good thing if one could also buy the time to read them in: but as a rule the purchase of books is mistaken for the appropriation of their contents.

Ouch.
