Goldberg Variations: Aria

July 28, 2014

Bach died on this day in 1750. Here is Daniel Barenboim playing the Aria from the Goldberg Variations. A few years ago, when we had an old piano in the house, I spent a good deal of time trying to learn to play the opening bars of this piece. I never did get very far.

  1. Gosh, if the opening, which sounds relatively simple, is difficult, imagine what some of those variations would be like. Never having played a keyboard at all, I don’t have a good grasp of how the Goldbergs rank in difficulty compared to other keyboard music, beyond the obvious challenge of playing anything as fast as some of those runs on any instrument.

Well, when you’re as talented as I am almost anything is a significant challenge, and the Aria proved to be well beyond my abilities.
