Forgetfulness of remembrance of times past?

December 30, 2013

Usually at this time of year I write a series of posts reflecting on my favourite books, music, and films of the past twelve months. Probably nobody has been bothered overmuch by my failure to do so this year, but, in any case, let me send this reassurance into the void: I am writing those posts, and I plan to put them up during the first week or two of the new year. They are shaping up quite well, it seems to me.

We read watch hear a lot of the items from your lists and look forward to the next set.

That’s encouraging! Thanks, Christina. And a happy new year to you. We’ll miss you tonight as our house fills up with revellers.

I concur with the above sentiment. By the way, I’m a longtime lurker from the southern US (Milledgeville, GA to be specific – home of the late Flannery O’Connor and what was once the 2nd largest Insane Asylum in the country). Thanks for a wonderful blog.

Thanks very much for that, Jake. I know there are quite a few people who read this blog but don’t leave comments. It’s nice to find out who one of them is! I’ve never been down to your part of the country, but you’ve given me some good reasons to make the trip. It sounds like I’d fit right in.

I am glad that you are preparing the lists! I have had much enjoyment from reading the books that you recommend and listening to the music you have found. I have just added Dr. Faustus to my reading list for 2014!

    Great to hear from you!

I hope you like Dr Faustus; I think you will. I should have mentioned that there are two English translations, by H.T. Lowe-Porter and John E. Woods. There are some who regard Lowe-Porter’s as more faithful to the style of the original, but I’ve only read Woods’, so I can only recommend that one.
