Sunday night wedding dance

July 20, 2008

A few people have asked about the song we had for our first dance as a married couple.  We went back and forth about it for the longest time — or, more accurately, we cast about aimlessly for the longest time.  There are long lists of “popular wedding dance songs”, but none of them appealed to us.  My wife doesn’t have much of an interest in music, so she couldn’t think of one; I know quite a lot of music, but it turns out that most of my favourite songs are about German dwarves, dead soldiers, and murders.  A few days before the wedding, I bethought me of this song: “These are the Days”, from Van Morrison’s album Avalon Sunset.  It’s got a nice, easy tempo, and the lyrics, though not perfect, do make reference to summer nights, dancing, love, and a wedding (the wedding at Cana, to be precise).  So we went with it, and I think we made a good choice.

[UPDATE: Audio removed at the request of Van's publisher.  You'll just have to buy the record.]

These are the days of the endless summer
These are the days, the time is now
There is no past, there’s only future
There’s only here, there’s only now

Oh your smiling face, your gracious presence
The fires of spring are kindling bright
Oh the radiant heart and the song of glory
Crying freedom in the night

These are the days by the sparkling river
His timely grace and our treasured find
This is the love of the one magician
Turned the water into wine

These are days of the endless dancing
Long walks on the summer night
These are the days of the true romancing
When I’m holding you oh, so tight

These are the days by the sparkling river
His timely grace and our treasured find
This is the love of the one great magician
Turned water into wine

These are the days now that we must savour
And we must enjoy as we can
These are the days that will last forever
You’ve got to hold them in your heart

Thanks for posting this. It was indeed a great first dance song – both happy, slow and sad all at the same time. It framed that moment of your first dance for me and it made me remember that marriage is long – when I listened to it at your wedding, it made me imagine what it would be like to think back to that special moment in your lives from 30, 40, 50 years from now…

Funnily, I also had trouble picking a first dance song that didn’t involve murder…do I sense a Nick Cave connection here?
“And no more shall we part…”

  2. Just wanted to comment here for the first time and say I like Sunday night wedding dance. I think the article is dedicated to the wedding dance floor. That simple piece of hardwood brings out the passion in all who cross her on that wedding night. The every wedding dance takes me back in my past life. And I enjoy each moments of life. Thanks for such posing.

    Hi Craig & Althea,

First-of-all, we’d like to extend our “Congratulations” and well wishes for your recent wedding.

On behalf of Exile Productions and Exile Publishing, we would kindly ask you, however, not to post pirate copies of Van Morrison tracks on your site. We do appreciate that you are fans of / are promoting Van, but Exile would greatly appreciate your co-operation in removing your link to the pirate file in question.

That being said, if you wish to post a video clip of your first dance on YouTube, then – following a special, automatic, copyright clearance process that Exile have secured for Van’s fans who are getting maried – you would be very welcome to upload your video onto YouTube and should simply include an industry standard, courtesy credit (ie. “Copyright music and recording reproduced by kind permission of Exile”).

For your info, we’re also pleased to announce that an increasing archive of exclusive film footage of Van Morrison performances has now been made available for fans on Exile’s official YouTube channel at http://uk.youtube.com/user/OfficialExileFilms.

Many thanks for respecting the label’s and publisher’s wishes and, once again, wishing you both all the very best of happiness.

    Regards,

    WEB SHERIFF

Nice choice, so sorry I was not there to see your “moves”.

I love Van Morrison, I am a “Brown eyed girl” and “Moondance” fan

I’ve run afoul of the law! Alas, we didn’t think to record the first dance, so I’m afraid the audio link will have to go. Let us pause in life’s pleasures, and count its many tears.
